BUT WHAT DID YOU LEARN? HEBREWS 5:11-6:3
HEBREWS 5:11-6:3
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand.
12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
1 Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God,
2 instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.
3 And God permitting, we will do so.

Over the summer we as a church worked on reading the Bible as much as we could.
As a group we usually had about 20 people regularly report.
We reported 7656 chapters... 3 people read over 2500 of the 7656.
Stats: 190 per person total apx 14 per week and 2.5 per day.
Over 70 people never reported a single chapter.
At the rate of 2 chapters a day we would have reported over 18K chapters read.
Just 30 years after Christ ascended back to heaven the church was already set in its ways.
It struggled with worship attendance (see 10:25) it struggled with basic theology (see chapters 9 and 10) and it struggled with knowledge.
What are you learning? What have you learned recently? Did you learn something this summer while we were emphasizing Bible reading?
1. MATURE BELIEVERS TRY TO KEEP GAINING UNDERSTANDING AND KNOWLEDGE.
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand.

The author has been doing his best to instruct these people. He obviously loves them and is greatly concerned.
We will never know about them but we know all about the people in the mirror.
We know how much they are willing to learn and apply themselves to the faith.
Are we trying, really digging into the Word of God?
Are we trying to gain understanding about the scriptures?
Name something you have learned in the last 6 weeks from the Bible…. _________________.
Most in our time and culture and a majority of the church are not even trying to understand the Bible.

2. IMMATURE BELIEVERS ARE CONTENT WITH SPIRITUAL BABY FOOD.
12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!
Given the choice between milk and meat a lot of people will choose milk. This is especially true spiritually.
A decision to not know is a decision to choose ignorance over understanding and ignorance can kill you spiritually.
Micah 6:8 He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
How would we know what God has shown us if we did not learn the scriptures? How can we act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God if we do not know his Word?
You cannot in good conscience allow yourself to be a baby Christian your entire spiritual life.
The reason why we see so many people in and out of church is because they have failed to mature in their faith.
3. ONE CANNOT MATURE ON SPIRITUAL MILK.
13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.
Any parent will tell you that no one in their right minds would want their baby to stay on milk or formula their entire lives.
We want our children to grow. If they do not we get concerned.
Just as babies must progress to toddlers to children to teens to adulthood, our spiritual lives must do the same.
We connect them to us 24/7 yet we cannot see the need for the same attention to our own spiritual living.
Have a simple Bible study with just the Bible and unless it is about Revelation very few will attend. Are you on milk or meat?
4. BELIEVERS ARE PERSONALLY REPSONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN MATURITY.
14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Right from wrong would seem like an easy decision. Solid food is for the mature.
If you are a mature and responsible believer you are going to look at the world and then look at your Bible for your reference and response.
No matter who tells you something you should check it to make sure it is true. That is what mature responsible Christians do.
Acts 17:11 Now the Berean Jews were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.
Are you maturing? Are you learning? Are you growing?
5. BELIEVERS OUGHT TO HAVE A BASIC UNDERSTANDING OF FAITH FACTS AND BE ABLE TO BUILD OUT FROM THERE. VS 1-2
The writer gives six points here that he believes all Christians should know. How many of us could explain all six?
If you go to a church you ought to know what it stands for and be able to explain it.
Can you explain your faith? Could you tell someone how to repent? Could you explain how sin leads to death? What can you explain about death and judgment?
What are you learning? What have you learned recently?
If this letter were written to you would you be ready for the lessons?
It’s not just about how many chapters it’s about growing in faith….
