THINGS ARE BETTER NOW LUKE 24:1-8 EASTER 2019
Luke 24:1-8
1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared and went to the tomb.
2 They found the stone rolled away from the tomb,
3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them.
5 In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead?
6 He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:
7 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.' "
8 Then they remembered his words.
If you had gone with the little group of people who prepared Jesus’ body for his burial after that horrible death on the cross no one would have dared to say “things are better now.”
Sunday came! Jesus was resurrected! Things were better now!
Because of the resurrection things are better now.
ONE:
BECAUSE OF THE RESURRECTION WE HAVE A BETTER LEADER.
We who follow the Lord are the spiritual descendants of Abraham.
Therefore any promise made to the Jewish people is made to us.
Hebrews 1:4
So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
Christ is our leader through life and in eternity.
We are free to live as children of God with all of the entitlements that go along with that.
The blessings of scripture are assured to us by the truth of the resurrection.
Everything in scripture hinges on the resurrection.
Things are better now because death has lost its sting.
1 Corinthians 15:54… “death has been swallowed up in victory.”
TWO:
BECAUSE OF THE RESURRECTION WE HAVE A BETTER HOPE.
Imagine for a moment if you will being a Gentile in the Jewish world.
You could convert but you would never be totally accepted.
After the resurrection he made acceptance of others, namely us Gentiles, a command.
Our hope is to be born again in Christ.
Our hope is that we are the people of God as citizens not as refugees.
Things are better now because we have hope.
Hebrews 6:9
Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are confident of better things in your case--things that accompany salvation.
Hebrews 7:19
(for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.
THREE:
BECAUSE OF THE RESURRECTION WE HAVE A BETTER PROMISE.
Christ never has and never will do anything half-way.
His plans are as perfect as he is.
In order to save us the perfect sacrifice would have to be made.
In the death and resurrection of Jesus that covenant, that plan, is perfectly presented, perfectly executed and is ours for the asking.
Hebrews 7:22
Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.
Hebrews 8:6
But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises.
Things are better now because these promises are not made by man but by God.
FOUR:
BECAUSE OF THE RESURRECTION WE HAVE A BETTER SACRIFICE.
Blood was used to cleanse just about everything.
The shedding of blood has always been associated with cleansing and forgiveness.
Hebrews 9:13-14, 22-23
13 The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean.
14 How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!
22 In fact, the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. 2
3 It was necessary, then, for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these sacrifices, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
Things are better now because the perfect sacrifice has been made.
FIVE:
BECAUSE OF THE RESURRECTION WE HAVE BETTER POSSESSIONS.
In spiritual terms, before the resurrection we had no inheritance so to speak.
Because of the resurrection we know we have Heaven as our inheritance.
Because of the resurrection we have better possessions. They are ours for eternity.
Hebrews 10:34-35
34 You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, because you knew that you yourselves had better and lasting possessions.
35 So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded.
Things are better now because of the certainty of our future.
SIX:
BECAUSE OF THE RESURRECTION WE HAVE A BETTER COUNTRY.
We would not have heaven if there were never a resurrection. If Christ had not been resurrected we would have no hope. With his resurrection we have hope of heaven for our eternal home.
Hebrews 11:16
Instead, they were longing for a better country--a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.
1 Corinthians 15:19-20
19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.
20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.
Things are better now because we have heaven to look forward to.
SEVEN:
BECAUSE OF THE RESURRECTION WE HAVE A BETTER LIFE APART FROM THIS WORLD.
Hebrews 11:35, 40
35 Women received back their dead, raised to life again. Others were tortured and refused to be released, so that they might gain a better resurrection.
40 God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.
There is coming a day and time on which each of us will leave this world and go to our reward.
Life for the first few generations of Christians was nothing short of atrocious.
For over 300 years it was illegal to be a believer.
The resurrection makes all things matter and makes all things better.
Because of the resurrection we have life and we have eternal life.
John 10:10
10 …I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
That is why we celebrate the resurrection. Things are better now!
