Sermon Notes

Are You Riding the Wave?
Psalm 66:5
Come and see what God has done, his awesome deeds for mankind!
John 1:44-46
44 Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, “We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” 46 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
There are a lot of people out there who want Christians to believe that the voice of Christ is being drowned out by the voice of the world.
Jesus is better known now than ever.
Are you doing your part to share him? Jesus. Not the church. Not programs. Not events. Jesus.
Rick Warren and his people were able to find what Jesus was doing and ride the wave he provided.
You and I have more opportunities to witness than we believe.
As of Jan 2018 Christian radio had 3644 stations which includes all genre of Christian music and teaching.
The second largest is country 2175 followed by news talk 2027.
The wave is rolling if you are willing to surf it. The word is out there in many forms if you are willing to use it to your advantage.
1. "New Again"
"As they nail me to this tree / Just know my Father waits for me / God, how can this be your will / To have your son and my son killed?"
Evans and Paisley sang this song for the soundtrack to the film The Passion of the Christ.
2. "Beer With Jesus"
Does Jesus even drink beer? He was an excellent wine maker.
The guy in this 2013 country song imagines that He does.
Are these not the questions that people are asking all the time?
A lot of so called Christians are not willing to talk about the hard questions.
Jesus put it on the heart of a secular singer to address the issues.
A lot of Christians got offended by this song. What I can do is not be offended by my friend and his beer. His beer and my coffee might just turn into something good.
3. "I Saw God Today"
"His fingerprints are everywhere / I just slowed down to stop and stare / Opened my eyes and man, I swear / I saw God today."
4. I Believe
Almost everyone has known some kind person who lived a good life.
Most people have questions about life and death and what happens when loved ones pass.
God is putting the words out there. People have questions and we have the answer.
5. Three Wooden Crosses"
"There are three wooden crosses on the right side of the highway / Why there's not four of them, Heaven only knows / I guess it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you / It's what you leave behind you when you go."
Practically every person in America has seen a cross at an accident site. That is an open door to talk about faith and spiritual matters.
6. "When I Get Where I'm Going"
"But when I get where I'm going / And I see my Maker's face / I'll stand forever in the light / of His amazing grace."
This song speaks volumes of the confidence of a believer. But how many believers used it?
There are even some Pop and Rock songs about faith:
1. "You Found Me" by The Fray
Lost and insecure You found me, you found me Lying on the floor Surrounded, surrounded Why'd you have to wait? Where were you, where were you? Just a little late You found me, you found me
The narrator in this 2008 rock song sees God on a street corner and confronts Him about not being there when tragedies struck.
Are you willing to discuss the hard subjects?
2. "What I've Done" by Linkin Park
I'll face myself to cross out what I've become Erase myself And let go of what I've done Put to rest what you thought of me While I clean this slate With the hands of uncertainty So let mercy come and wash away What I've done
The narrator seeks forgiveness and a break with the sins of the past.
He regrets past actions and wants a clean slate.
How many need a clean slate? Just about everyone.
You don’t have to have all the answers. All you need is two ears and a gentle spirit. This lyric has been heard 100 million times. The wave is there.
3. "Arms Wide Open" by Creed
Well I just heard the news today It seems my life is going to change I close my eyes, begin to pray Then tears of joy stream down my face With arms wide open Under the sunlight Welcome to this place I'll show you everything With arms wide open
It portrays a new father's earnest prayer to teach his child how to embrace the world with arms wide open.
Song writers are doing a better job than many Christians in terms of addressing spiritual issues.
What are your life circumstances doing right now that you are really depending on God for? That is a wave you can ride.
What are the life circumstances that your friends, family, work associates, neighbors and others you know doing that needs God in the middle?
The subject of religion is everywhere. The wise Christian capitalizes on this by jumping in and talking good about God.
The message is simple.
1. Often the world is more open about God discussions than we realize.
2. Often we miss opportunities to share our faith because we do not see how God is working outside our little concept of Him.
3. Often we choose not to ride a wave that God presents us because we fear falling and failing.
4. God is saying through all kinds of people and all manner of media: I am Here and I am the Answer.
5. If Christians do not jump on this and use what God has out there we fail to be like Phillip and say: come and see. Don’t miss the wave.
