2 Timothy 3:1-5 Check the Box Christians

1 But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.
2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy,
3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good,
4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God—
5 having a form of godliness but denying its power….

Apathy, not caring about spiritual matters is one of the most prevalent problems that people have today. There is spiritual danger in not caring.

This is the greatest danger that we as a local church face. We are in deep with check the box Christianity.

Check the box Christians come in, do their hour or so with God and move on.

Check the box Christians are just here because they think they have to be, not because they are hungry for an encounter with God.

Revelation 3:15-16
15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!
16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.

Lukewarm Christianity is not sufficient.

1. Check the box Christians lack the spiritual power needed to grow in their relationship with the Lord .

Being a Christian is not nearly as easy as those who are not Christians
think it is.
At the same time, being a Christian is not nearly as hard as the ones who claim to be Christians make it out to be.

Check the box Christians have not matured in the faith. They will never progress to real issues of faith and service, commitment and being called by the Lord to serve him because they remain babies.

Hebrews 5:11-6:3
11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 
12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 
13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 
14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.
1 Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 
2 instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 
3 And God permitting, we will do so.

1 Corinthians 3:1-3
1 Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ.
2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready.
3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?

The danger of being a Check the box Christian is that you will never have the power of the holy spirit in your life.


2. Check the box Christians make the church weak.

Busy-ness is not necessarily a sign of true spiritual health. It can be, but it does not have to be.

Check the box Christianity is the cause of more churches being closed than any other cause on the face of the planet.

The devil gets a lot of credit for things he didn’t do. The truth is that unless people are serious about their relationship with the Lord the church is going to be weak.

If people are serious about being disciples the church will be strong. Where
people play around the church will be weak.

Philippians 2:12-16
12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,
13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing,
15 so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky
16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.

Check the box Christianity weakens the church. Serious Christianity strengthens the church.

3. Check the box Christianity has no real witness.

There is a big difference in being a religious person and being a strong witness for Jesus Christ.

There are people who are more religious about their golf, hunting, fishing and football than some Christians are about church.

Check the box Christianity is about being religious to appear holy. True discipleship is dying to oneself in order to let Christ live in us.

A Check the box Christian has no real witness because the Check the box Christian has no depth of experience with the Lord , has no real roots imbedded in the faith and has no desire for the deeper experience of sanctified living.

The Check the box Christian is hooked onto the superficial, the serious Christian
is in love with Jesus.

Ephesians 3:16-21
16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being,
17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,
18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,
19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,
21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
